How to file KRA TAX returns if you are employed

WHO SHOULD FILE TAX RETURNS?

The government requires every individual who holds an active Kra Pin certificate to file their tax returns yearly.

WHEN SHOULD YOU FILE TAX RETURNS

Tax returns are filed every year before the end of the month of June.

STEPS TO FILE TAX RETURNS

1. Access the KRA Itax portal using this link https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/

2. Enter your pin/ user id in the field provided and click continue.

3. Enter your password, security stamp answer and click login.

4. You will be taken to the admin panel page. Point the cursor to returns on the navbar and select file returns on the dropdown menu.

5. A window will appear where you will select type, taxpayer pin and taxpayer occupation. The type and taxpayer    pin will already be filled. Select income tax-resident individual under taxpayer occupation and click next.

6. On the next window, click on number 5 where it is written "click here to download income tax resident individual form".

7. Navigate to where the file is downloaded and extract it.

8. Open the extracted excel file and start by entering the personal identification number.

9. Select original for the type of return field.

10. Enter the return period from: ie 01/01/2021.

11. Enter the return period to: ie 31/12/2021.

12. Scroll down and then click next.

13. On the next page, enter pin of employer.

14. Enter name of employer.

15. Fill the Gross pay.

16. Fill the allowances and benefits from employment (if none, enter zero).

17. Fill the net value of housing (if none, enter zero).

18. Enter pension if in excess of Kshs. 300,000.

19. Scroll down and click next.

20. Fill pin of employer on the next page.

21. Enter name of employer.

22. Enter taxable salary.

23. Fill tax payable on taxable salary.

24. Enter amount of tax deducted.

25. Scroll down and click next.

26. Scroll down again and click next.

27. Fill defined/ pension contribution.

28. Fill the personal relief field.

29. Scroll down and click validate.

30. Click yes on the prompt to generate upload file.

31. Time to upload the file now. Go back to the website and click choose file.

32. Select the file to upload it.

33. Check to agree the terms and conditions.

34. Click submit and confirm.

35. A confirmation returns receipt will be generated.

36. Click on it to download and print.
